Who we are

Our mission is to provide accessible, affordable, and compassionate counseling and education services, in a welcoming space where individuals and families in Athens and surrounding communities feel seen, heard, and supported.

We value accessibility, affordability, and professionalism. We value the strength and resiliency of our clients and community. We value collaboration with other agencies to provide holistic, comprehensive care. Our vision is that everyone in our community can get the mental health services they need, regardless of ability to pay & without fear of stigma.

Family Counseling Services was established in 1969. In our 57-year history, we have provided therapeutic services to thousands of people in the Athens area and collaborated with multiple community organizations to provide free and reduced-cost therapy services. We’ve had the opportunity to foster the growth of many therapists and social workers, through our full-time staff and through our second-year UGA Master’s of Social Work interns.

Over the years we have also become a respected partner in a number of community collaborations, such as the DV Task Force, in an effort to address the public safety concerns of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and impaired driving.

Our welcoming facility, the Carson Center, was dedicated in 1996 in honor of Bob and Barbara Carson, for their efforts in the early establishment of FCS as well as their involvement in other humanitarian efforts in the community.

We feature artwork in our lobby from community members. For information on viewing or displaying artwork, please call us.
